The Turks and Caicos Islands has now been given the ‘all clear’ for movement.
Hurricane Fiona is now at Category 3 – DDME ALERT
AT 2AM EDT, THE CENTER OF HURRICANE FIONA WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 20.9 DEGREES NORTH AND LONGITUDE 70.8 DEGREES WEST, OR ABOUT 45 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF GRAND TURK.
FIONA IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHWEST NEAR 10 MPH. THIS GENERAL MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH TODAY, FOLLOWED BY A TURN TOWARD THE NORTH TONIGHT OR WEDNESDAY. ON THE FORECAST TRACK, THE CENTER OF FIONA WILL PASS NEAR OR TO THE EASTERNMOST TURKS AND CAICOS DURING THE NEXT SEVERAL HOURS.
The first major storm to approach the Turks and Caicos Islands in 2022, Tropical Storm Fiona has progressed to Category 2 Hurricane Fiona.
The DDME and NEOC has announced a countrywide shutdown, effective September 19, 2022 at 7pm where persons may not leave their homes or shelters until the National all-clear is given.
As of 7:00pm September 19, The Bahamas Department of Meteorology reported that Fiona is strengthening. Rainbands are currently spreading across the TCI, with hurricane conditions expected to show its face in the Islands by midnight. As Hurricane Fiona is now a Category 2 Hurricane, further strengthening is expected while it moves over the western Atlantic.
